Jessner peel works by removing the top layer of the skin thereby reducing hyperpigmentation and other skin conditions such as age spots or acne scarring. The peel is typically a medium peel which means that it will work on the top layer of the skin – the epidermis and the upper portion of the middle layer of the skin – the dermis. It removes skin cells from both these layers revealing a smoother and clear skin.

Using Jessner peel for hyperpigmentation gives great results. This is why it is a preferred method of reversing various signs of hyperpigmentation. How deep the peel penetrates depends on the type of peel used – superficial, medium or deep.

Jessner peel can also be used as a superficial peel which has low downtime and the skin heals faster. Due to a range of Jessner peel benefits, it is also added to other peel solutions to increase their effectiveness.

  • Side Effects Of Jessner Peel

It is important to remember that a chemical peel is the willful application of an ACID to produce a controlled injury to the skin. By intentionally causing “damage”, you prompt the body into 1) amping up the production of collagen and elastin which form the support system for the epidermis and 2) cause the outermost layers of the epidermis to slough off to reveal newer, fresher skin. WARNING: If you are at all unsure about any aspects of using this product, DO NOT proceed. By purchasing and using this product, you do so at your own discretion and assume all liability for the outcome.

NORMAL REACTIONS AFTER APPLYING A PEEL: Prior to using thepeel you should be aware of the side effects of a Jessner peel:

    • Mild redness
    • Swelling or soreness, inflammation
    • Itching or burning sensation
    • Cold sores (if you carry the herpes virus)
    • Premature peeling
    • Scabbing, crusting, oozing, or flaking
    • Hyperpigmentation, darkening of the skin in areas, this is usually temporary and will shed away. However, individuals with darker skin tones could take 2-6 months to remove with lightening procedures.
    • Scarring or infection - Infections and scarring can result if the shedding skin is picked at or removed before it is ready, NEVER pull or pick at loose skin, allow it to fall off on its own.
    • Jessner's Peels are typically layered until frosting appears. The peel *will* sting significantly while it is on the skin. Once neutralized (cool water wash), you may experience redness or a tan coloration to the skin for several days. This is normal.

Jessner peel is known to produce results effectively and safely regardless of the skin type. As compared to other chemical peels, it is a popular alternative to treat hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne scarring, age spots, wrinkles, fine lines etc. for a more flawless and even-toned skin. It is advised to talk to your dermatologist before deciding for Jessner peel and follow the instructions thoroughly for desired outcomes.

    Pre-Peel Instructions:

Stop using any chemical peels, retinoids, salicylic acids, bleaching products, waxes, hair removal chemicals, benzoyl products for at least 5 days prior to the aplication. Up to 30 days if you are using Accutane.

    • Never apply a peel without doing a patch-test first and waiting 48 hours for results.
    • Never apply a chemical peel to inflamed skin.
    • Always read product directions in their entirety and don't take shortcuts.
    • When in doubt about a caution, please write or call us for more information.

PATCH TEST: IMPORTANT AND CRUCIAL! It is strongly recommended that you perform a patch test of the peel solution prior to full application. 3 days prior to the peel, apply a small patch of the solution to the skin behind your ear. If no negative or unusual reactions are noted, you can safely proceed with your treatment.

STEP 1. Begin by washing the skin with your cleanser (an acid based cleanser is recommended and or a mild scrub to remove dirt and oils). It is important that you not use a cream, lotion, or pearlescent cleanser which may leave residue. After washing and patting the skin dry, use a cotton pad/ball to wipe down the area to be treated with your pre-peel solution or 70% alcohol. Failure to remove all oils from the surface of the skin will result in patchy and uundesireable results. Using the Prep Solution or 70% Alcohol will ensure all the oils are removed from your skin.

STEP 2. Apply a small amount of peel solution to the gauze pad. Next, apply the solution in a thin layer to your skin. Be sure to avoid the immediate eye area, lips, and inside the nostrils.

STEP 3. You may need to reapply solution to the gauze pad several times to complete the entire face or treated area. The skin should not be dripping but should be slightly damp with the solution. Some mild types of peels may be gently buffed into the skin with the gauze pad while the peel solution is processing. Allow the peel to process for the recommended time notes on the specific peel product page or back of your peel bottle.

For Beginners (people new to a Jessner Peel or peels in general) 1 (one) layer should be applied and left on no more than 3 min. If no frosting occurs at this time, continue to step 4 and reapply in 10 days. If after 10 days no peeling occurs you can try the application again and add an additional layer for 3 min. Redness and/or frosting would mean you would end your peel by neutralizing.

For intermediate users or individuals with oily/resistent skin: Apply 1 (one) layer for 3 min then apply an additional layer for an additional 3 min. Allow the skin to "frost" then proceed to step 4. Redness and/or frosting would mean you would end your peel by neutralizing

For experience users : Apply up to 3 layers allowing 3-5 min between each layer, when the skin begins to "frost" then proceed to step 4. If frosting starts on the 2nd layer then proceed to step 4, do not apply additional layers. Redness and/or frosting would mean you would end your peel by neutralizing.

*** Experienced users can layer a Jessner peel up to 8 layers and 3 min per layer, as a rule of thumb neutralize the peel once the skin "frosts". Do not leave on skin longer than necessary!

STEP 4. Once you are ready to remove the peel you will apply the Neutralizer Solution ( you can make a neutralizer from home by mixing 1 part baking soda to 2 parts water) directly over the peel to stop the action of the acid and then rinse everything off with cool water for 30 seconds. Gently pat the skin dry.

STEP 5. Moisturize the skin as needed after the peel and always apply a minimum of SPF 50 to protect the skin during the day. In the event you have used too strong of a peel or opted for a very deep exfoliation and the skin is raw and or oozing, you should apply a barrier ointment (Neosporin, Aquaphor, etc.). A hyaluronic gel is recommended to use during this time, coconut oil, argan oil, jojoba oil  and aloe vera gel is recommended as well.
